A New Set of Eyes: Southeastern Guide Dogs Transform Lives

As part of its 25-year celebration, Landgate donated $5,000 each to five nonprofits – one of which was Southeastern Guide Dogs, nominated by Landgate agent, Lisa Couture.
Lisa is an independent contractor working with Working Solutions on their top fitness program account. Her life has been directly impacted by the work of Southeastern Guide Dogs. “I am legally blind, and I depended on a white cane every day,” said Lisa, who nominated the agency.
At its founding in 1982, Southeastern Guide Dogs had two employees, founders Dr. Harris Silverman and Robert Miller, and three dogs. Its mission is to provide guide dogs to the visually impaired. Today, the organization runs one of the most sophisticated guide dog breeding and training facilities in the world. It provides animals to individuals in all 50 states.

Its mission has expanded to help not only the blind, but also soldiers with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and children with life-threatening disorders. The service is completely free to those who use it. For this reason, fundraising is essential to operate.

Landgate Customer Service agent, Lisa Couture, moved to the Tampa Bay area from her home state of Massachusetts. That’s when Lisa, a mother of three, was introduced to Southeastern Guide Dogs, now one of the most respected guide dog training operations in the country.

“The experience literally transformed my life. The dogs are incredible because they are so well bred and trained,” said Lisa.

Regarding Landgate and her client, Lisa said they have both gone out of their way to be accommodating. “If you came to my house, you’d see huge screens connected to my computer. That’s literally the only way I can do my work. I’m just so fortunate to work for companies that care so much about their agents.

“Southeastern Guide Dogs is an amazing cause that enables people to lead fuller lives. And its commitment to service parallels ours,” said Working Solutions President and Chief Executive Kim Houlne. “It is particularly gratifying to know that one of our agents has benefited directly.”
